My Family of Immigrants

by Sofia Peña y Lillo

If the ethos of the United States is largely hostile to immigrants, how do we begin to challenge the antagonistic narratives that this community is subject to every day?

Through a confluence of material image, embodied presence and voice, My Family of Immigrants serves to celebrate the people, objects, and emblems that complicate the dominant ideologies which seek to circumscribe their identity and everyday life. In collaboration with her family, colleagues, and friends, first-generation artist Sofia Peña y Lillo is exploring how to articulate her community as more than a statistic or label.
